AI Stocks Lead Rebound on Wall Street
On Monday, shares of artificial intelligence (AI) companies made a notable recovery from the significant declines seen the previous week, although the broader market experienced volatility. The S&P 500 index increased by 31.29 points, equivalent to 0.4%, settling at 7,690.73. In contrast, the Dow Jones Industrial Average witnessed a slight decline of 36.38 points, or 0.1%, to close at 51,966.03 after fluctuating between gains and losses throughout the session. The Nasdaq composite, however, showed a stronger performance, climbing 290.85 points, or 1.1%, to reach 26,430.89.
According to the Associated Press, the majority of U.S. stocks outside of the AI and technology sectors experienced declines. Meanwhile, European markets also faced challenges, with major indexes dropping over 1% amid protests over the weekend that may compel governments to increase their expenditures. This potential rise in government spending could exert additional pressure on bond markets, leading to higher yields globally.
Nvidia, a leading player in the AI sector, saw its stock rise by 1.4%, contributing significantly to the S&P 500's upward movement. Being the largest company on Wall Street by market capitalization, Nvidia's stock fluctuations have a considerable impact on the index. Additionally, SpaceX, which oversees the xAI initiative, experienced a 1.3% increase, bringing its share price to $147.73. On Monday, CEO Elon Musk announced a plan to distribute one share of SpaceX to "every kid in America" next year, following a commitment from Anthropic to allocate 5% of its shares in its forthcoming initial public offering to a new "public benefit" fund.
Despite the gains in AI stocks, trading remained volatile. CoreWeave, a company that has invested in AI chips for cloud rentals, was particularly notable for its erratic performance. After initially surging by 7% early in the day, the stock reversed course and ended with a loss of 0.4%, following a significant drop of 25.2% the previous week.
This volatility comes in anticipation of upcoming earnings reports that are expected to shed light on the health of AI-related investments. Meta Platforms, which is advancing its Muse AI technology, is set to release its quarterly results on Wednesday. Lam Research, a supplier of semiconductor manufacturing equipment and services, will also provide insights into its business performance on the same day.
Overall, there are high expectations for U.S. companies' earnings this summer. Analysts project a remarkable growth rate of 29% for S&P 500 companies compared to the previous summer, as reported by FactSet. These optimistic forecasts have supported the U.S. stock market's rise to record levels despite concerns regarding geopolitical tensions, persistent inflation, and pressures from the bond market.
In a noteworthy development, Cleveland-Cliffs, a steel manufacturing company, saw its stock surge by 16% after reporting a quarterly profit that exceeded analysts' expectations. CEO Lourenco Goncalves stated that this quarter marked the strongest performance for the company in three years and expressed optimism about the profit outlook for 2027, which he said "has improved materially" compared to three months ago.
