Badger Meter (BMI) shares skyrocket, what you need to know
Shares of Badger Meter Inc. (NYSE:BMI), a company specializing in water control and measurement technologies, surged by 7.3% in afternoon trading following the release of their third-quarter financial results, which exceeded analysts' expectations. The company reported GAAP earnings of $1.24 per share, outperforming the consensus estimate of $1.21 and showing an increase from $1.19 in the same period last year. The operating margin remained stable at 20.2%, consistent with the previous year's third quarter.
In terms of revenue, Badger Meter generated $235.9 million, which was flat compared to the prior year and fell short of the anticipated $241.1 million by 2.1%. However, the underlying performance indicated positive trends. Excluding the impact of the UDlive acquisition, utility water sales grew by 5% from the second quarter, driven by ongoing advancements in awarded Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) projects. Additionally, software revenue helped balance out the uneven pacing of various projects, while flow instrumentation sales experienced a 2% increase. The company benefited from a favorable product mix that bolstered its gross margin.
Management expressed optimism regarding future performance, anticipating an improvement in base revenue both sequentially and year-over-year in the fourth quarter, despite having fewer operational days. They expect this positive momentum to carry over into 2027. Furthermore, Badger Meter announced a 10% increase in its annual dividend, raising it to $1.76. This marks the 34th consecutive year the company has raised its dividend. During the quarter, they also repurchased approximately $55 million worth of stock. The free cash flow margin was reported at 17.1%, down from 20.5% the previous year.
Investors are now left to consider whether this is an opportune moment to invest in Badger Meter. The company's stock has shown volatility, experiencing 11 price movements greater than 5% over the last year. The latest rise suggests that the market views the recent news as significant, although not enough to fundamentally alter its overall perception of the company.
Over the past year, the most notable stock movement occurred six months ago when Badger Meter's shares plummeted by 18.9% after the company reported disappointing first-quarter results. During that quarter, sales, adjusted operating income, and earnings per share fell short of Wall Street's projections. Management attributed this shortfall to "variability in project timing," indicating that while demand remained strong, the actual installation and billing for large municipal projects were delayed beyond the first quarter. Despite expressing confidence in a stronger second half of 2026 and announcing a strategic $100 million acquisition of UDlive to enhance its sewer-monitoring capabilities, the stock faced downward pressure due to immediate execution challenges.
Year-to-date, Badger Meter shares have declined by 18.5%. Currently priced at $143.70, the stock is trading 23.5% below its 52-week peak of $187.87 reached in November 2025. Nevertheless, investors who purchased $1,000 worth of Badger Meter shares five years ago would now see their investment valued at approximately $1,375, reflecting a positive long-term return despite recent volatility.
