Chubb (CB) vs. Travelers (TRV): Which P&C Insurance Giant Is the Better Buy?
Chubb Limited (NYSE:CB) and The Travelers Companies, Inc. (NYSE:TRV) are recognized as two of the leading property-and-casualty insurers globally. Currently, both companies appear to be undervalued, with Chubb's shares trading at approximately 11.8 times earnings and Travelers at about 8.8 times. Both insurers are benefiting from an environment of rising interest rates, which enhances their investment income derived from the premiums they collect. However, they are also encountering similar challenges, particularly as the pricing for commercial insurance begins to decline. The primary distinction between the two lies in their operational profiles: Chubb is a premium, globally diversified insurer, whereas Travelers is a more cost-effective, US-centric company that has recently experienced significant growth.
Chubb operates internationally, providing specialty and commercial insurance while also expanding its life insurance segment, which saw a 7.5% increase in premiums last quarter. This diversification gives Chubb an edge over insurers focused solely on the US market. The company boasts exceptional underwriting performance, with a combined ratio of approximately 84%, significantly lower than the industry average, which typically hovers in the low 90s. This indicates that Chubb is generating substantial profits even before accounting for investment income, which has also seen an increase of around 11.4%. Moreover, Chubb has recently announced a dividend increase. However, analysts express caution regarding its stock price and the prevailing market cycle. Although it commands a premium compared to Travelers, some analysts have adjusted their target prices downward due to the easing of commercial insurance pricing. Additionally, when compared to an exceptionally strong quarter from the previous year, Chubb's near-term profit growth may face challenges.
Chubb has secured a position as the 10th best stock for dividends in the S&P 500, according to a recent ranking. For those interested in exploring the stocks that ranked higher, further information is available.
On the other hand, Travelers, trading at about 8.8 times earnings, stands out as the most affordable option among major insurers. The company primarily targets the US market and has seen a surge in its stock price, increasing by over 25% in the past four months. This growth can be attributed to strong underwriting results, reduced catastrophe losses, and the same benefits from rising interest rates that enhance investment income. With $3.3 billion allocated for share buybacks in the first half of 2026, Travelers has successfully reduced its outstanding shares, which can contribute to higher earnings per share.
However, there are concerns that much of the positive news surrounding Travelers may already be reflected in its stock price. Currently, the shares are trading near their 52-week high and slightly above the average target set by analysts. Notably, firms like HSBC and Mizuho have lowered their target prices for Travelers. Additionally, the company's less diversified portfolio makes it more vulnerable to catastrophic events occurring in the US. Similar to Chubb, Travelers is also facing a softer pricing environment, with expectations that its profits may decline in the upcoming quarter compared to a strong performance in the previous year.
