Cloudflare acquires Deno to improve its Workers programming model | TechCrunch
On Friday, Cloudflare announced its acquisition of Deno, the company behind the Deno programming runtime. This strategic move aims to enhance Cloudflare's Workers programming model and platform, which enables users to develop and deploy applications on Cloudflare's extensive network. Kenton Varda, the principal engineer for Cloudflare Workers, shared insights on the acquisition.
Deno, co-founded by Ryan Dahl, the original creator of Node.js, and Bert Belder, recently introduced celld, an open-source version of Workers. Varda expressed that the launch of celld was met with enthusiasm by the Cloudflare team, stating it “delighted” them. He emphasized that contrary to the belief that Cloudflare designed its Workers platform to create vendor lock-in, the company is committed to open-source principles and believes that providing users with an "escape hatch" is beneficial for business.
Ryan Dahl added that his team is excited to join Cloudflare with the goal of making the Workers programming model a widely adopted method for server development.
The financial specifics of the acquisition have not been revealed. Deno has successfully secured a total of $26 million in funding, which includes a Series A investment led by Sequoia Capital.
