I'm Getting A $50K Settlement And Could Finally Be Debt-Free. But Am I Making A Mistake By Not Investing

Receiving a substantial settlement can significantly alter one's financial landscape, particularly for individuals grappling with considerable debt. However, the decision on how to allocate such funds can be complex, especially when considering the potential for future investments. This dilemma was presented by George, a resident of New York, on “The Ramsey Show,” where he sought guidance on whether to eliminate his debts or invest part of his $50,000 settlement to foster long-term wealth.

George's financial situation included $34,000 in total debt, comprised of $8,000 in credit card debt, $10,000 in student loans, and $16,000 owed on his car. In addition to this debt, he had approximately $2,000 saved in cash and had contributed around half of the annual limit to his Roth IRA.

Co-host George Kamel quickly advised George to prioritize debt repayment. “You just became debt-free,” Kamel remarked, congratulating him on the opportunity to clear his financial obligations. Despite this optimistic outlook, George hesitated, questioning whether using the entire settlement to pay off his debts was indeed the most prudent course of action.

Kamel reinforced the importance of eliminating debt first, followed by establishing an emergency fund, before focusing on investments. He cautioned that attempting to invest while still in debt could limit the overall investment amount. “If you invest while you’re carrying debt, you’re not going to invest very much,” Kamel explained. He also noted that a single unexpected expense could potentially push someone back into debt if they lack adequate savings.

By paying off his $34,000 in debt, George would have $16,000 left from his settlement, which, when combined with his existing savings, would give him $18,000 for emergencies. “And then you start investing,” added personal finance expert Dave Ramsey, who emphasized the strategy of using future income to build wealth without ongoing obligations to creditors.

Not everyone has the luxury of receiving personalized financial advice like that available on “The Ramsey Show.” Platforms like Advisor.com aim to democratize access to financial guidance by connecting individuals with fiduciary professionals tailored to their needs. Their free matching quiz takes about five minutes and helps users find vetted advisors for budgeting, taxes, estate planning, and more.

Ramsey concurred with Kamel's recommendation for George to pay off his debts but expressed concern regarding George's financial habits post-settlement. He warned that if George did not change his spending behavior, he might resort to using credit cards again. Ramsey urged George to cut up his credit cards and commit to avoiding future borrowing for purchases like cars or credit cards. He emphasized the rarity of receiving a settlement large enough to eliminate all debts, advising George to seize this opportunity wisely. “You’re not getting one of these again,” Ramsey cautioned. “You get one get-out-of-jail-free card. So, use it. Be debt-free, but never go back.”

To create a robust investment portfolio, it is essential to consider more than just a single asset or market trend. Economic fluctuations can impact various sectors differently, and no single investment is guaranteed to perform well under all circumstances. Many investors diversify their portfolios by exploring opportunities in real estate, fixed-income investments, precious metals, and self-directed retirement accounts. This approach helps mitigate risk, secure steady returns, and build long-term wealth independent of any single company or industry.

For accredited investors looking to explore options beyond traditional stocks and bonds, platforms like EquityMultiple provide access to vetted commercial real estate investments starting at $5,000, with only about 5% of opportunities passing their stringent due diligence. Additionally, Arrived Homes, backed by Jeff Bezos, facilitates real estate investing with a low entry cost, allowing investors to buy fractional shares in single-family rentals and vacation homes starting at just $100. This enables everyday investors to diversify into real estate, earn rental income, and build wealth without the responsibilities of property management.

In the entertainment sector, companies like Skybound Entertainment are developing original intellectual properties that span various media platforms, creating long-term assets as franchises expand. With a portfolio of over 250 IPs, Skybound presents investors with opportunities in the growing entertainment and creator economy outside the traditional public market. Furthermore, American PowerGen is tapping into the rising demand for reliable energy, particularly as artificial intelligence drives increased electricity needs, by developing natural gas-fired power plants in Texas, positioning itself to meet the infrastructure demands of future industrial growth.
