Is the stock market open on Columbus Day, Indigenous Peoples' Day?
On Monday, October 12, the United States stock markets will remain open, operating as a typical business day, despite the observance of both Columbus Day and Indigenous Peoples' Day. In contrast, the U.S. bond market will be closed for the day, as stated by the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association.
Columbus Day, which falls on the second Monday of October, has been recognized as a federal holiday since 1892. It is celebrated nationwide, often featuring parades that celebrate Italian-American heritage, according to Smithsonian Magazine.
In recent years, there has been growing criticism regarding Christopher Columbus and his historical treatment of Native Americans. In response to this, former President Joe Biden made history in 2021 by issuing the first presidential proclamation designating Indigenous Peoples' Day, aligning it with Columbus Day. Although it is not a federal holiday, Indigenous Peoples' Day is acknowledged in various states and cities across the country.
Following a closure for Labor Day on September 7, trading on Wall Street will continue without interruption until late November. The next planned closure for the stock market is on Thursday, November 26, in celebration of Thanksgiving.
For reference, the holiday schedule for U.S. stock markets in 2026 includes the following key dates: Thanksgiving on Thursday, November 26, and Christmas on Friday, December 25.
