Lee Jae-myung urges objective data as South Korea housing prices soar

On the 3rd of this month, President Lee Jae-myung addressed the issue of soaring housing prices in South Korea during a Cabinet meeting, asserting that the current situation is indicative of a larger problem within the nation's real estate market. He stated, "It is evident that housing prices in the Republic of Korea are unreasonably high, and we must work towards eliminating the stigma of being a country focused on real estate speculation."

During his remarks, President Lee acknowledged the ongoing debates regarding the future trajectory of housing prices in the Seoul metropolitan area. He remarked, "While we cannot predict the future with complete certainty, it is undeniable that housing prices are excessively elevated. Moving forward, it is crucial that we dispel the notion of being a nation plagued by real estate speculation." He stressed the importance of providing clear and objective data to the public.

The president expressed concern about the dissemination of statistical data, stating, "We regularly publish data, but I am apprehensive about whether it is being communicated effectively." He pointed out that certain parties benefiting from the rising housing prices may be selectively interpreting data to support their narrative, rather than presenting a comprehensive view.

Lee also noted a significant increase in apartment listings within the Seoul area, coupled with a sharp decline in transaction volumes. He commented, "The actual sale prices in key neighborhoods are dropping, and the extent of this decline is quite surprising." This observation underscores his belief that the housing market is undergoing significant changes.

Reiterating his stance, President Lee emphasized the necessity for real estate prices to reach a state of stability. He stated, "It is imperative for the government to respond to market conditions based on accurate and reliable information." This call to action highlights the administration's commitment to addressing the challenges posed by the current real estate landscape in South Korea.
