Luxury cruise passengers stranded in Cambodia due to soaring fuel costs
A luxury cruise ship known as the Villa Vie Odyssey, which has been on a multi-year global journey, has halted its operations due to unprecedented fuel price increases, resulting in passengers being left stranded in Cambodia. The cruise operator, based in the United States, is currently coordinating plans for passengers to disembark and is also making arrangements for temporary accommodations.
While the exact number of passengers aboard the ship remains unclear, the Villa Vie Odyssey, measuring nearly 200 meters (656 feet) in length, has the capacity to accommodate up to 650 individuals. The vessel began its ambitious voyage from Belfast in October 2024, with plans to embark on a continuous journey around the world.
The surge in global fuel prices, which has escalated since the onset of the conflict in Iran earlier this year, has significantly impacted the cruise industry. The operator reported that the cost of fuel per cabin in parts of Asia has skyrocketed from $1,800 to as much as $8,000 (£6,000) monthly. In response to these challenges, the cruise line attempted various measures to decrease fuel usage, such as extending stays at ports and slowing down its travel schedule. However, these efforts proved inadequate in countering the dramatic rise in fuel expenses.
The company emphasized that fully transferring the increased costs to customers was not a viable option. It is now focusing on restructuring and recapitalization efforts over the next 60 days, although it acknowledged that there are no guarantees for a successful outcome.
Before the suspension of its journey was announced on Tuesday, the Villa Vie Odyssey had been on its global route for over 750 days. This unexpected halt means that the passengers, approximately 200 in number, are now stranded in Cambodia, as reported by Bloomberg, citing the cruise operator's founder.
The Villa Vie Odyssey boasts a range of amenities, including multiple bars and restaurants, a pool deck, and a pickleball court, as outlined on its official website. Cabin prices for permanent residency on the ship range from $120,000 to $440,000, with rental options available starting at $3,500 per month.
In 2022, the cruise line introduced a lifetime residence program aimed at individuals looking to spend their retirement at sea. Following the 2024 election, when former President Donald Trump secured a second term, Villa Vie Residences launched a four-year "Skip Forward" package. During an interview with Fox Business at that time, the CEO described it as an ideal option for those contemplating leaving the country based on election outcomes.
