Moderna Now Trades 61% Above Wall Street's Average Price Target. Should You Sell? | The Motley Fool

Moderna (MRNA), a biotechnology company, has become one of the most prominent stocks in the market this year, experiencing an impressive increase of over 500%. This surge follows a remarkable rise of more than 2,000% from early 2020 to August 2021, driven largely by the success of its coronavirus vaccine, which generated significant revenue. During the early days of the pandemic, Moderna gained widespread recognition for its rapid development and distribution of a vaccine that quickly became one of the highest-selling pharmaceutical products globally.

However, the company's fortunes took a downturn in the following years. As the demand for the vaccine diminished in the later stages of the pandemic, Moderna faced challenges that prompted it to implement cost-cutting measures. Although the company made strides in obtaining approvals for additional products and advancing its research pipeline, investor enthusiasm did not return immediately, resulting in a decline in its stock price over the past few years.

In 2023, investor sentiment towards Moderna has notably shifted, particularly due to advancements in its personalized cancer vaccine candidate. This renewed interest has led to a significant increase in the stock's value, which is now trading 61% above the average price target set by Wall Street analysts. This raises the question of whether it is an appropriate time for investors to consider selling their shares.

Moderna's growth can be largely attributed to its pioneering messenger RNA (mRNA) technology, which underpinned the development of its coronavirus vaccine. At its peak in 2022, Moderna's vaccine sales exceeded $18 billion, showcasing the effectiveness of its mRNA platform, which instructs the body to produce specific proteins that combat various diseases.

Since the onset of the pandemic, Moderna has expanded its product offerings and strengthened its pipeline. Currently, it markets four products in the United States: two coronavirus vaccines, a flu vaccine, and a vaccine for respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). Recently, the company also secured approval in Europe for a combined flu and coronavirus vaccine. Despite these advancements, investor recognition of Moderna's potential beyond its initial pandemic success was slow, leading to an 83% decline in stock value over the past three years.

This year marks a significant turnaround for Moderna, as excitement surrounding its personalized cancer vaccine has attracted new investors. The company is currently conducting around ten clinical trials for this candidate, with the most advanced trial in phase 3. Recently, Moderna announced that its candidate, known as intismeran autogene, in combination with Merck's Keytruda, met crucial endpoints for recurrence-free survival and prevention of cancer spread in a melanoma study. Based on the results from this phase 3 trial, Moderna plans to consult with regulatory agencies regarding potential submissions for approval.

Much of Moderna's stock gain this year can be attributed to the positive data released from these trials. However, with the stock now trading considerably above Wall Street's average price target, investors are left wondering if it is time to sell. Given the rapid increase in stock value this year, a period of stagnation or a pullback could be expected.

Nonetheless, the long-term outlook for Moderna remains optimistic. Although some positive developments may already be reflected in the current stock price, the company is still in the early stages of its growth trajectory. The personalized cancer vaccine is being explored for various cancer types, potentially allowing it to be used for a wide array of patients. It is important to note that personalized vaccines may not be as easy to produce at scale compared to non-personalized treatments, which could affect growth even after product approval.

Moderna's robust pipeline, however, has the potential to transform the company into a major player in the biotechnology sector, offering a diverse range of products across different treatment areas and a promising earnings outlook. For investors considering their options, if you have held onto Moderna shares for a significant period and wish to secure some profits to invest in other stocks or sectors, now may be a prudent time to do so. While the stock could experience a pause following its substantial gains this year, the prospects for future product launches and pipeline advancements suggest that Moderna remains a compelling biotech investment for the long term.
