Nearly 6 million coffee makers sold at major retailers recalled over burn risk
Approximately 6 million coffee makers are being recalled due to a potential burn hazard caused by the risk of glass breakage during use, as reported by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). The recall impacts 5.9 million Bodum French press coffee makers that feature 8-cup and 12-cup glass carafes, which can shatter unexpectedly if they are damaged or have cracks. This risk is particularly heightened if metal utensils, such as spoons, are used for stirring coffee, according to the CPSC notice.
The Bodum branding is typically found on the frame and inner lid of the majority of the affected models, as well as being engraved on the glass carafes themselves. The recall was announced by Bodum USA on October 29, following the receipt of 70 reports concerning the breakage of carafes during their use. Out of these reports, 48 incidents involved consumers suffering burn injuries.
Bodum stated, "While the rate of reported incidents involving carafe breakage during use is extremely low, especially considering that Bodum has sold millions of these products in the U.S. for decades, this recall will further encourage the safe use of our French Press Coffee Makers." The company is taking proactive measures to ensure consumer safety amid the reported incidents.
The CPSC has advised consumers to immediately refrain from using metal spoons or any similar utensils for stirring coffee in the glass carafes. Instead, they should reach out to Bodum to obtain a plastic stirring spoon and a warning label, which will help mitigate the risk associated with the glass carafes.
The recalled coffee makers were available for purchase at major retailers including Target and Walmart, as well as various coffee and home goods stores across the country. They were also sold online through Amazon, Target.com, Walmart.com, and other e-commerce platforms from 1974 until October 2026, with prices ranging from approximately $15 to $65.
