SpaceX profit helps lift tech stocks and Wall Street

The U.S. stock market experienced an upswing on Wednesday, driven by robust earnings reports from notable companies, including SpaceX and Capital One Financial. The S&P 500 index increased by 0.6%, bringing it within 0.8% of its record high achieved earlier this month. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose by 360 points, or 0.7%, while the Nasdaq composite saw an increase of 1.1%.

SpaceX played a significant role in propelling the market, with its shares surging by 7.8% after announcing profits that exceeded analysts' expectations. Elon Musk, the CEO of SpaceX, mentioned that the company is exploring the possibility of a merger with Tesla, his electric vehicle venture. Following this news, Tesla's stock also rose by 3.4%, contributing to the positive momentum of the S&P 500.

Investor optimism for profit growth across various sectors is high as the summer approaches in the Northern Hemisphere. Companies are under pressure to meet these expectations, especially given the recent increases in stock prices amid concerns about persistent inflation, rising interest rates, and other challenges facing Wall Street.

In the realm of artificial intelligence (AI), stocks have shown volatility. The AI sector has been a focal point of market activity in recent weeks, but recent trends have raised concerns. Investors worry that the expansion of data centers might slow down due to the rising costs of borrowing. Despite these concerns, SpaceX's profit report indicated strong spending in AI, providing some reassurance to the sector. Additionally, Super Micro Computer, a company specializing in AI servers and services, announced it anticipates stronger revenue growth for the summer due to increased demand for AI platforms, resulting in a 9.5% rise in its stock price.

Overall, the S&P 500 rose by 44.60 points, closing at 7,757.17. The Dow Jones Industrial Average increased by 360.21 points to finish at 52,856.09, while the Nasdaq composite climbed 278.04 points, reaching 26,702.86.

Internationally, European markets experienced gains following a mixed performance in Asia. South Korea's Kospi index notably surged by 3.3%, reflecting a resurgence in AI stocks.

In the bond market, the yield on the 10-year U.S. Treasury bond rebounded from an initial decline, rising back to 5.12%, consistent with levels observed late on Tuesday. This fluctuation was influenced by the volatility in oil prices, which remained unstable. Brent crude oil prices fluctuated between $108 and $111 per barrel, ultimately settling at $108.82. Throughout October, oil prices have fluctuated between $97 and $112, amid uncertainty regarding the timeline for the resolution of the conflict with Iran and its impact on the global energy market.
