SXI Q3 deep dive: electronics segment drives growth, management outlines multi-pronged expansion

Standex International Corporation (NYSE:SXI) reported a strong performance in its third quarter of calendar year 2026 (fiscal Q1 2027), surpassing Wall Street's revenue forecasts. The company achieved sales of $232.6 million, marking a 7% increase compared to the same period last year. Its non-GAAP earnings per share (EPS) stood at $2.41, exceeding analysts' predictions by 3.2%.

In terms of financial specifics, Standex's revenue exceeded the S&P analysts' estimates of $229.5 million, resulting in a 1.3% outperformance. While the adjusted EBITDA was reported at $51.2 million, slightly below the expected $51.78 million, the operating margin improved to 18.4%, up from 16.6% in the same quarter of the previous year. The company's market capitalization is currently valued at $3.05 billion.

Standex's management attributed the robust results primarily to organic growth within its electronics segment, which has been driven by increased demand from data centers, grid modernization efforts, and the growing trend of electrification. CEO David Dunbar noted that the introduction of new products and the company's expansion into rapidly growing markets, particularly in defense and aerospace, have been critical in propelling revenue growth. The company also reported ongoing improvements in profit margins, supported by higher production volumes and enhanced operational efficiency across its various divisions.

Looking ahead, Standex has adjusted its outlook to reflect sustained demand for its products in sectors serving data centers, grid infrastructure, and defense. Management anticipates that these markets will continue to drive growth, with more than 30% of total sales expected to come from 'fast-growth' areas. CFO Ademir Sarcevic, who is transitioning to the role of President of Electronics, highlighted plans for investments in expanding production capacity, particularly in grid manufacturing and global partnerships. These initiatives are expected to bolster organic sales growth and lead to significant increases in adjusted earnings per share.

During the earnings call, management shared insights into the various factors contributing to the company's growth this quarter, with particular emphasis on the electronics segment and new product offerings. They also discussed important organizational changes and the impact of broader industry trends on Standex's core markets.

The electronics division stood out, achieving nearly 30% organic growth due to strong demand from data centers and electrification projects. Management indicated that customers in this segment are increasingly viewing Standex as a strategic partner, which has led to discussions about long-term supply agreements that could enhance earnings predictability.

New product sales have also played a significant role, with a 56% year-over-year increase. Dunbar referred to the current product launch pipeline as a "flywheel gaining momentum," and management expects these new initiatives to contribute over 300 basis points to organic growth this year.

Standex is actively pursuing capacity expansions in locations such as India, Croatia, Mexico, and Houston to meet rising demand, particularly in grid-related applications for data centers and global electrification efforts. Notably, the Croatia facility is anticipated to begin product shipments in the upcoming quarter following customer certifications.

Sales in fast-growth markets, including defense and space, are projected to exceed $315 million this year, reflecting a growth rate of over 20%. These markets now account for more than 30% of the company’s total revenue, providing resilience and diversity that helps mitigate reliance on sectors like data centers.

In terms of leadership changes, the appointment of Samantha Stoddard as the incoming CFO and Colby Slaughter as Chief Legal Officer signals a commitment to enhancing operational scale and governance. Sarcevic's transition to President of Electronics is expected to facilitate a commercial realignment aimed at strengthening global customer relationships, particularly within the grid sector.
