This Movie Theater Chain Stock Has Outperformed Peers With 86% Gains In 2026: Wall Street Sees Further Upside

AMC Entertainment Holdings (AMC) has seen its stock price surge by approximately 86% in 2026, significantly outperforming its competitors, including IMAX Corp. (IMAX), Cinemark Holdings Inc. (CNK), and Marcus Corp. (MCS). This remarkable rise can be attributed to exceptional box office revenues, impressive financial results, and a successful debt restructuring strategy.

Roth Capital recently adjusted its price target for AMC Entertainment, increasing it from $3 to $3.25, while maintaining a 'Neutral' rating on the stock. This new target suggests a potential upside of around 12% based on AMC's most recent closing price.

The analyst from Roth Capital explained that the upward revision of the third-quarter estimates for AMC is due to record domestic box office performance and unexpectedly strong growth in European markets. The company has gained significant market share, aided by its substantial exposure to IMAX and the outstanding success of the film "The Odyssey."

During the opening weekend of "The Odyssey," AMC attracted 4.3 million visitors, marking the largest R-rated opening for the chain since 2024. The film has achieved remarkable box office success, grossing over $286 million in North America and more than $640 million globally shortly after its release, eventually surpassing $1.1 billion worldwide, making it one of the highest-grossing IMAX films ever.

In addition to its domestic success, AMC's European operations reported an 18% increase in attendance year-over-year in the second quarter, outpacing the overall growth rate of the European film industry, which stood at 16.2%. International revenues also saw a notable rise, climbing 19.2% year-over-year to reach $338.1 million, supported by a 2% boost from the appreciation of European currencies.

Looking ahead, AMC is set to announce its third-quarter earnings after the market closes on November 4. Analysts from Fiscal.ai predict that the company will generate $1.62 billion in revenue for the quarter, representing a 24% increase compared to the same period last year. Additionally, earnings per share are expected to be $0.10, a significant turnaround from a loss of $0.58 per share reported in the previous year.

Despite the positive developments surrounding AMC's stock, retail sentiment on Stocktwits has been described as 'bearish' at the time of writing, with message volumes noted to be 'low.' This mixed sentiment reflects the ongoing volatility in the market and varying perspectives among retail investors regarding the future performance of AMC's stock.
