Wall Street Worries About AI Investment Returns as Nasdaq 100 Enters Technical Correction Again

The U.S. technology stock market is currently undergoing a period of adjustment as investors reassess their expectations regarding artificial intelligence (AI) investments. Gone are the days when high valuations were justified solely by the long-term potential of AI. Now, a key concern for Wall Street is whether the substantial investments made by tech giants in AI will yield corresponding returns. On Monday, the Nasdaq 100 index fell into a technical correction for the third time this year, declining by 1.4% to close at 27,989.82 points. This drop marked a cumulative decrease of over 10% from its previous high on October 6, which meets the criteria for a technical correction. Despite this recent downturn, the index still shows an approximate gain of 11% for 2026, indicating that repeated corrections reflect fluctuating investor sentiment toward the prospects of AI, with increasing volatility in the tech sector.

The primary catalyst for the recent sell-off in technology stocks is a growing concern about the costs associated with AI infrastructure and the timeline for returns on these investments. Major tech firms are investing hundreds of billions of dollars to establish AI data centers, acquire chips, and enhance their computing capabilities. However, the rising capital expenditures have prompted investors to question how quickly these investments will translate into revenue and profit. Recent earnings reports have exacerbated these concerns. For instance, Alphabet, the parent company of Google, reported revenues from its advertising and search business that fell short of expectations, resulting in its largest single-day stock price drop since its initial public offering. Similarly, shares of Meta and Amazon also saw declines following their quarterly earnings announcements.
