Wells Fargo, Arm and Intuit Reject Tokenized Shares on OKX-ICE

In a recent development, six additional companies, including Wells Fargo (NYSE: $WFC), Arm Holdings (NASDAQ: $ARM), and Intuit (NASDAQ: $INTU), have informed a joint venture between cryptocurrency exchange OKX and Intercontinental Exchange (NYSE: $ICE) that they will not permit their shares to be tokenized on its platform. This news was reported by Reuters on Friday, revealing that the objections had not been previously disclosed and bringing the total number of companies opposing the initiative to 22.

The reasons behind these objections have not been specified in the reported documents. The joint venture, named OKXICE, had plans to tokenize a total of 63 different stocks and had submitted a filing to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) earlier this month to initiate the process under the agency's new innovation exemption. This exemption mandates that platforms must inform companies prior to listing tokenized versions of their stocks and prohibits proceeding with the tokenization if any issuer raises an objection. Furthermore, tokenized shares are required to uphold the same rights as traditional shares, which include entitlements to dividends and voting rights.

The growing number of objections underscores the increasing hurdles that tokenization faces, which involves creating digital tokens representing stocks that can be traded on a blockchain, similar to cryptocurrencies. This comes in the wake of the SEC's recent approval of such products, indicating a complex landscape for the future of stock tokenization.

The latest companies to voice their concerns follow earlier objections from major firms including Microsoft (NASDAQ: $MSFT), Alphabet (NASDAQ: $GOOGL), Goldman Sachs (NYSE: $GS), and CoreWeave (NASDAQ: $CRWV). As reported by Crypto Briefing, these objections are specific to the OKXICE venue and do not necessarily reflect a blanket opposition to all forms of stock tokenization.

As of now, neither Arm nor Intuit has provided comments on the matter, while a spokesperson for Wells Fargo declined to offer any statements. In the financial markets, shares of Intercontinental Exchange are currently trading at $162.74, while Wells Fargo's stock is valued at $82.39.
