Why Is 3M (MMM) Stock Rocketing Higher Today

Shares of 3M (NYSE:MMM), an industrial conglomerate, surged by 5.2% during the afternoon trading session following the company's announcement of its third-quarter results for 2026. The firm also increased its full-year adjusted earnings per share forecast and revealed an expanded partnership with Amazon.

As detailed in a press release from the company, 3M reported third-quarter GAAP sales totaling $6.6 billion, along with an adjusted organic sales growth of 3.3%. The adjusted operating income margin for the quarter was recorded at 26.2%, with adjusted earnings per share reaching $2.50. In light of these results, 3M raised its guidance for full-year 2026 adjusted earnings per share to a range of $9.10 to $9.15.

In addition to its financial performance, 3M disclosed its enhanced commercial relationship with Amazon, aimed at scaling and deploying optical connectivity and various data center products. As part of this partnership, 3M granted Amazon a warrant to purchase up to 3.2 million shares, contingent upon achieving $6 billion in cumulative sales over a seven-year period.

The stock closed at $171.50, reflecting a 5.9% increase from the previous day's close.

In terms of market behavior, 3M's shares have exhibited low volatility, with only four instances of price movements exceeding 5% over the past year. This recent increase suggests that the market regards the news as significant, although it may not fundamentally alter perceptions of the company's business operations.

Notably, the most substantial price movement observed in the past year occurred three months ago when 3M's stock rose by 8.3%. This increase followed the release of second-quarter results that surpassed Wall Street expectations, alongside a raised full-year profit forecast. During that quarter, adjusted earnings per share were reported at $2.40, exceeding the consensus estimate of $2.25. Sales for that quarter reached $6.5 billion, indicating a 5.4% organic growth compared to the previous year. Although profitability faced challenges, with the operating margin declining from 18.5% to 15.1% year-over-year, investors were encouraged by the company's optimistic outlook.

During that same announcement, management raised its full-year adjusted earnings per share guidance to an average of $8.88, reflecting a 3.2% increase. The combination of exceeding expectations for both revenue and earnings, along with the raised guidance, suggested underlying strength in the company, prompting the stock's upward movement.

Year-to-date, 3M's stock has risen by 6.1%. As of the latest trading session, shares are priced at $171.64, which is close to the 52-week high of $183.78 reached in August 2026. Despite this year-to-date increase, long-term investors who purchased $1,000 worth of 3M shares five years ago would see their investment valued at only $940.88 today.
