Crypto News: Why Are Bitcoin, Ethereum And XRP Prices Crashing Today?

The cryptocurrency market is experiencing significant turmoil, marked by a dual crisis. A major security breach involving Binance, which has resulted in a loss of $6.3 billion, has eroded investor confidence, while a steep sell-off on Wall Street has further depressed prices for risk assets. Bitcoin, in particular, has dropped below the crucial $80,000 support level, reaching its lowest point in six weeks.

Recent market data reveals substantial declines across leading cryptocurrencies. Bitcoin is now priced at $76,428, reflecting a 5.5% decrease within the past 24 hours and a 6.3% drop over the past week. Ethereum has fallen to $2,228, down 4.6% in the last day and 7.3% over the week. Other notable declines include BNB, which is down 6.4% in the last 24 hours to $696, and XRP, which has decreased by 4.0% to $1.24.

The trading activity for Bitcoin has surged, with a 24-hour volume around $194 billion, indicating heavy selling pressure.

One major factor contributing to this downturn is the unprecedented Binance hack. This incident is now being termed the largest cyber theft in the cryptocurrency sector by monetary value. Following initial reports of the breach, Bitcoin's price plummeted from approximately $78,700 to a low of $76,368 overnight, breaking through the $80,000 support level that had previously held strong.

Changpeng Zhao, the founder of Binance, downplayed the potential impact of the hack, suggesting that the losses may not be as grave as they seem. He drew comparisons to past incidents, such as the Mt. Gox hack, which saw 650,000 BTC stolen—over 5% of the total Bitcoin supply at the time—and affected nearly all users. In contrast, Zhao emphasized that Binance would cover all losses from this incident.

Another contributing factor to the downturn is the performance of U.S. stocks, which experienced their worst day since June, resulting in a total loss of approximately $1.5 trillion in market value. The significant declines were evident across major indexes: the S&P 500 fell by 1.89%, the Nasdaq dropped 3.14%, the semiconductor index declined by 3.74%, and small-cap stocks saw a 2.10% decrease. Given Bitcoin's tendency to move in tandem with technology stocks, the downturn in the Nasdaq and semiconductor sectors has intensified the pressure on cryptocurrency prices.

Expert analyst Michaël van de Poppe noted that Bitcoin faced rejection at the $81,000 mark, leading to a swift decline toward $76,000 to close a price gap. He indicated that the critical levels to monitor are a possible drop to the September low of $75,000, which could serve as a final support floor, and a recovery above $79,000, ideally back to $80,000, to regain upward momentum.

Despite the sharp decline, some analysts from Glassnode suggest that the drop might not be as severe as it appears. Data indicates that Bitcoin is currently testing its True Market Mean, with a potential fall to around $75,800—the average cost basis for short-term holders—still allowing for an upward trend to remain intact. Historical data shows that similar retests, like one in mid-September, were followed by significant price increases shortly thereafter.

Investors are drawing parallels between the current situation and previous major exchange hacks. For instance, following the Bitfinex hack in 2016, Bitcoin dropped by 9.7% in one day but subsequently surged by 395% over the following year. Similarly, after the FTX collapse in 2022, Bitcoin fell by 10.0% on the day of the event but rebounded to rise 119% in the year that followed. Although the Binance hack is significantly larger than these past events, the immediate price drop has been comparatively less severe.

Looking ahead, Bitcoin faces a critical juncture: it can either establish a higher low or potentially decline toward its cycle low of $58,000. Key levels to monitor remain between $75,000 to $75,800 on the downside and $80,000 on the upside.
