Global Market Today: Wall Street gains lift Asian stocks as Fed decision looms

Asian stock markets experienced gains, buoyed by positive momentum from Wall Street, as investors awaited a crucial decision from the Federal Reserve. In Japan and South Korea, stock indices rose, contributing to a 0.6% increase in the MSCI Inc.'s Asia Pacific equities index. Additionally, U.S. equity index futures showed upward movement in early trading.

The technology sector remained a focal point as major companies such as Meta Platforms Inc., Broadcom Inc., and SpaceX revealed plans for fundraising. This news propelled the S&P 500 to a 0.7% increase, while the Nasdaq 100 saw a 1.1% rise. Notably, the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index surged by 2.8%, marking its largest gain since September 21.

In the commodities market, Brent crude oil prices continued to fall, settling below $116 a barrel on Monday. This decline coincided with diplomatic efforts by officials from various nations who traveled to Tehran in an attempt to resume discussions aimed at preventing further escalation in the Middle East. U.S. crude oil prices also dropped for the second consecutive day, falling 0.4% to approximately $101.35 a barrel. Meanwhile, short-term U.S. Treasury yields slipped, the U.S. dollar strengthened slightly, and Bitcoin traded below $80,000.

Anthropic's upcoming offering is seen as a significant test of investor interest in artificial intelligence companies, especially following recent concerns over inflated valuations and substantial spending that led to a downturn in chip stocks. Investors are also preparing for the Federal Reserve's rate decision on Wednesday, alongside earnings reports from major corporations, which could provide fresh insights into the AI sector's outlook.

In a notable development, SpaceX has entered into a substantial $40 billion equipment-finance lease with Apollo Global Management Inc. to fund the chips necessary for its AI initiatives. Earlier in the year, Alphabet Inc., Google's parent company, aimed to raise as much as $85 billion in equity. Anthropic is expected to go public next year, potentially followed by its main competitor, OpenAI.

Anthropic recently filed its long-anticipated S-1 document, bringing it closer to becoming the first publicly traded company primarily focused on developing advanced AI models. Investors are closely analyzing the filing for indications of demand in the AI market amidst previous uncertainties.

This renewed enthusiasm comes after a turbulent week for technology stocks, during which the Nasdaq 100 fell by 2.9% on Thursday, following a day when Meta Platforms Inc. raised its capital expenditure guidance beyond its operating cash flow, unsettling investors who are eager to see returns on substantial AI investments.

As the week unfolds, earnings reports from major AI investors, including Alphabet and Microsoft, scheduled for Wednesday, and Amazon and Intel on Thursday, will be closely monitored. Investors are particularly interested in these companies' spending plans and whether their investments are yielding satisfactory returns.

Richard Saperstein from Treasury Partners emphasized the importance of understanding how these companies plan to finance their AI expenditures moving forward, questioning whether they can rely on cash flows or if they will need to resort to issuing equity or debt.

In Brazil, markets faced a downturn following President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva's re-election, raising concerns about potential fiscal strains in the country, which is the largest economy in Latin America. Philip Brown, head of research at FIIG Securities, noted that the upcoming election-heavy period could lead to increased market volatility.

Brown pointed out that while U.S. mid-term elections would be a significant focus for the markets, the Israeli elections could also have geopolitical implications, particularly concerning the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

The Federal Reserve's decision this week is anticipated to be another crucial test for the markets, with many analysts expecting rates to remain unchanged following a hike in September. Chairman Kevin Warsh is expected to reaffirm the central bank's commitment to managing inflation while explaining the rationale behind not implementing another rate increase at this time.

Current market sentiment predicts a 10% likelihood of a rate hike on Wednesday, compared to over 70% odds for an increase by the end of the year. Christopher Harvey, head of equity and portfolio strategy at CIBC, remarked that while macroeconomic factors usually take a backseat during earnings season, the upcoming Fed meeting could complicate the situation.
