Tech firms track Wall St rally on mixed day for Asian markets
On Tuesday, technology companies experienced a surge in stock prices following a positive trend on Wall Street, where traders reacted favorably to the initial public offering (IPO) filing of AI powerhouse Anthropic. This development has rekindled optimism in the tech sector, which had faltered during the latter part of the year.
Most of the gains were observed in South Korea and Japan, while other Asian markets exhibited a mixed performance. Investors are bracing for a series of important earnings reports and central bank announcements scheduled for later in the week.
In its IPO submission, Anthropic, recognized as one of the leading firms in artificial intelligence, disclosed that its revenue for the first half of the year skyrocketed by approximately 1,300 percent compared to the same period last year. However, the company also highlighted potential safety concerns associated with its technologies.
The upcoming IPO is considered a critical benchmark for assessing the profitability potential of the AI sector. A lukewarm response to the offering could further dampen investor enthusiasm, particularly as there are growing doubts regarding the substantial investments made in the industry and the financial health of several companies.
Anthropic's filing specifically notes the risks tied to the AI industry, which has recently faced numerous reports of AI systems operating in unexpected and detrimental ways. The company warned, “If the use of our AI models results in harm, whether through use by malicious actors or misuse by other third parties, or if our model guardrails or safeguards fail to prevent such misuse, our business could suffer.”
Despite these concerns, technology stocks listed on Wall Street saw an uplift, driving the Nasdaq, S&P 500, and Dow Jones Industrial Average higher. Seoul's stock market briefly surged by more than four percent, propelled by significant gains from major chip manufacturers SK Hynix and Samsung. Meanwhile, Tokyo's market gained approximately two percent, driven by increases in shares of Kioxia, Advantest, and SoftBank.
Fiona Cincotta from FOREX.com commented on the improved sentiment towards technology stocks, stating, “Investors are evaluating Anthropic's IPO filing at the beginning of a week filled with corporate earnings and the Federal Reserve's interest rate decision.” She added, “Anthropic revealed steep losses and impressive revenue growth in its filing, laying out ambitions to build AI systems capable of reshaping the global economy, even at a high cost. The listing plan remains intact, even as other firms have stepped back due to recent market volatility.”
While Sydney, Taipei, and Manila also saw gains, markets in Hong Kong, Shanghai, Singapore, Wellington, and Jakarta experienced declines. Investors are now looking forward to earnings reports from prominent companies, including members of the Magnificent Seven—Microsoft, Alphabet, and Amazon—as well as SK Hynix and Samsung.
As for the Federal Reserve, it is anticipated that interest rates will remain unchanged when the decision is announced on Wednesday. However, the CME Group’s FedWatch tool indicates a 70 percent likelihood of a rate increase during the Fed's December meeting.
