Joby Stock Tumbles Today: What Spooked Investors and What Wall Street Sees Next
Joby Aviation (NYSE: JOBY) experienced a significant drop in its stock price on Friday, falling approximately 7% following a downgrade by Barclays. The investment firm reduced its rating for the electric air taxi company from Equal Weight to Underweight, which is equivalent to a Sell recommendation, and lowered its price target from $6 to $4. This action was driven by concerns regarding Joby’s costly strategy of managing the production, operation, and maintenance of its aircraft independently, even if it becomes the first company to obtain regulatory certification.
Barclays analyst Anthony Valentini expressed skepticism about the value investors are placing on Joby’s potential first-mover advantage in the emerging market for electric vertical takeoff and landing (EVTOL) vehicles. He argued that simply achieving an early lead does not guarantee market dominance. Valentini also raised doubts about whether Joby’s aircraft can accommodate enough passengers to attract a broader customer base, as well as whether the company’s production capabilities can support significant growth.
“We don’t see the EVTOL market as winner takes all,” Valentini cautioned, indicating that other competitors could still secure substantial opportunities, even if Joby achieves certification first. The analyst highlighted particular concerns regarding Joby’s choice to manage nearly all aspects of its operations internally. While this model could potentially enhance revenue capture in the long run, it necessitates considerable upfront spending before the company can start generating income from passenger flights. Valentini suggested that a strategy focused on selling aircraft directly to customers might yield faster financial returns and better profitability compared to the slower revenue model of collecting fares from individual passengers.
“We view this strategy as too aggressive and too capital and time intensive,” Valentini stated, noting that although Joby has a strong financial standing and a potential lead in certification, these factors do not warrant its current high valuation.
This downgrade comes during a challenging period for Joby, with shares plummeting by more than 50% since the start of 2026. Despite these challenges, the company is making strides toward launching commercial air taxi services, compelling investors to balance its technological advancements against the high costs associated with bringing its aircraft to market.
Compounding these worries, a federal jury in Florida recently awarded Aerosonic, an aircraft component manufacturer, nearly $116.9 million in a trade secrets case against Joby Aero. The jury concluded that Joby had breached a confidentiality agreement and misappropriated technology related to aircraft sensors. This ruling represents a potential financial strain on Joby as it invests heavily in certification and production efforts.
Joby is also facing legal challenges in its ongoing dispute with competitor Archer Aviation. In late September, a federal court in California dismissed several claims from Joby’s lawsuit against Archer, along with Archer’s counterclaims, although other parts of the case remain unresolved. Both companies are striving to launch commercial air taxi operations, with their respective certification timelines likely to impact investor sentiment.
Despite these setbacks, some investors maintain a positive outlook regarding the long-term prospects of the electric aviation sector. Cathie Wood’s ARK funds have continued to acquire shares of both Joby and Archer, indicating that she sees potential opportunities in the industry despite the significant hurdles confronting these companies.
While Barclays appears to be taking a bearish stance on Joby, the overall sentiment on Wall Street is more varied. Among the eight analysts covering Joby, two have a Buy recommendation, three suggest holding the stock, and three advise selling, resulting in a consensus rating of Hold (Neutral). Nevertheless, the average 12-month price target of $10.56 suggests a potential upside of nearly 97% from current stock levels.
