Lazard: 3 Key Takeaways for Long-Term Investors

During its earnings call for the third quarter of 2026 on October 22, Lazard (NYSE:LAZ) announced an 11% increase in adjusted net revenue compared to the previous year, attributed to a rise in mergers and acquisitions (M&A) activity. The advisory firm is demonstrating that its significant investments in senior talent and private market advisory services are starting to enhance its revenue capabilities, while management works to control operational expenses.

Three key insights from management stood out during the call:

1. **Advisory Pipeline Doubles as Transaction Velocity Accelerates** Lazard is experiencing a notable increase in client engagements, with its probability-weighted advisory pipeline for 2027 now standing at double the volume of the 2026 pipeline at the same point last year. This uptick in activity is largely attributed to the productivity gains from recent hires of managing directors (MDs), whose output is exceeding initial expectations. “Our weighted pipeline for 2027 is now two times our 2026 pipeline at this time last year,” stated Peter Orszag, the Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of Lazard.

2. **Expansion into Private Capital Advisory Adds Growth Scale** The impending acquisition of the placement agent Campbell Lutyens will create Lazard CL, a specialized unit focused on private fundraising and secondary advisory services. Management anticipates that this new division will contribute positively to earnings by 2027, while also capturing increased deal flow in private equity and infrastructure sectors. Orszag highlighted, “In private capital advisory, we continue to anticipate Lazard CL will generate approximately $500 million of revenue and will be accretive to earnings in 2027, even before accounting for potential synergies.”

3. **Restructuring Operations Decouples Future Costs from Revenue** To enhance operating margins, Lazard is modernizing its corporate workflows and integrating artificial intelligence tools into its support functions. The goal is to automate repetitive tasks, reduce administrative overhead, and ensure that non-compensation expenses do not rise in line with revenue growth. Tracy Farr, the Chief Financial Officer, noted, “We are now reviewing vendors to advance implementation, which includes process automation and centralization of certain activities, shifting how work is delivered and staffed with a long-term objective to decouple expense from revenue growth.”

Looking ahead, demand from clients remains strong despite the prevailing high interest rates. Lazard is strategically utilizing its global reach and managing $54 billion in gross inflows to enhance its market share while maintaining operational discipline.
