Not Guinness, Not Budweiser: The Most Popular Beer In The US Is A 101-Year-Old Mexican Lager - Tasting Table

When it comes to enjoying a cold beer, many people seek a moment of relaxation after a long day. This desire for leisure may be a key factor in the rising popularity of Corona, which has recently been recognized as the most favored beer in the United States, according to a survey conducted by YouGov.

YouGov’s methodology is straightforward: they asked American consumers about their perceptions of various beer brands, categorizing their responses as positive, negative, or neutral. The results revealed that Corona boasts a popularity rating of 60% among respondents, placing it ahead of other well-known brands, including Guinness at 56% and Budweiser at 54%. When examining preferences by age group, both Millennials and Generation X identified Corona as their top choice, while Baby Boomers showed a distinct preference for Guinness. Gender differences also emerged, with women favoring Corona and men slightly leaning towards Guinness.

Corona Extra, a Mexican lager, has a rich history, having been brewed for over a century. It was first introduced in 1925 to commemorate the 10th anniversary of Cerveceria Modelo, and it quickly gained popularity in the U.S. and worldwide over the years. Interestingly, despite its long-standing presence in Mexico, the brand's significant rise in the U.S. market has primarily occurred in recent decades.

The success of Corona can be attributed to its marketing prowess. While some tourists in Mexico may have enjoyed the beer in the 20th century, it wasn't until 1979 that Corona made its debut on American shelves. From that point on, the brand's marketing strategies propelled its growth. The distinctive clear glass bottle, adorned with a painted label, set it apart visually from its competitors. However, the true strength of Corona's success lies in the mental imagery created by its advertising campaigns.

Promotional efforts like the "Find Your Beach" campaign effectively linked the beer to images of palm trees, sandy beaches, and tranquil waters, all complemented by a lime wedge perched on the bottle's neck. This unique association with tropical vacations has proven difficult for other brands to replicate, establishing a strong positive perception of Corona not only in the U.S. but globally. While rankings of Mexican lagers may place Corona in the middle tier in terms of taste, its popularity is unparalleled. Currently, Corona is sold in 180 countries and has been recognized as the most valuable beer brand worldwide for three consecutive years.

Though some beer enthusiasts may deem Corona a simple or unexciting lager, its branding power remains unmatched. The beer has become emblematic of tropical relaxation, a combination that has significantly contributed to its popularity in the U.S. and beyond.
