NovoCure: 3 Key Takeaways for Long-Term Investors

During its earnings call for the third quarter of 2026, held on October 29, NovoCure (NASDAQ:NVCR) reported a record net revenue of $193 million for the quarter and revised its full-year revenue forecast upwards. The oncology device manufacturer is approaching a state of sustained profitability as it sees growing patient adoption in its primary markets. Management highlighted three key points during the call.

Firstly, the company’s core business in brain cancer treatment has achieved record patient numbers, significantly contributing to its profitability. The adoption of Optune Gio, a treatment for glioblastoma—a particularly aggressive form of brain cancer—resulted in a 16% year-over-year increase in net revenue for the third quarter. Additionally, the company reported an adjusted EBITDA of $16 million, which accounts for earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, amortization, and share-based compensation. Christoph Brackmann, the Chief Financial Officer, emphasized that reaching adjusted EBITDA positivity this year marks a crucial milestone in their journey toward profitability and expressed optimism about providing updates on their progress and future goals in the coming months.

Secondly, NovoCure is expanding its presence in Japan, which is expected to become its second-largest market after the United States. The commercial rollout of Optune Lua, aimed at treating non-small cell lung cancer, generated $4 million in revenue during the third quarter, with reimbursement pricing aligning with established global standards. Frank Leonard, the Chief Executive Officer, stated that with the growing success of Optune Gio, they anticipate Japan will eventually rank just behind the U.S. in terms of market size.

Lastly, the company is facing challenges in its launch of Optune Pax for pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma, a type of pancreatic cancer. The growth in prescriptions has slowed due to the clinical burden caused by insurance appeals and side-effect management related to a new competing drug, diraxonrasib. Leonard noted that the introduction of diraxonrasib has limited their ability to access clinical practices for promoting Optune Pax, resulting in a slowdown in momentum in the U.S. market.

Looking ahead, NovoCure's commercial activities in its key markets have led to a revised revenue guidance for the full year, now estimated to be between $736 million and $743 million. The company is committed to maintaining pricing discipline and operational efficiency as it concludes its significant spending on launch infrastructure. Brackmann remarked that the essential investments for launching new indications and supporting a larger patient base have mostly been completed. As they continue to gain traction across their commercial portfolio, he believes there is considerable potential for profit and loss leverage to be realized.

Management's expectations for growth as they enter 2027 are supported by the anticipated outcomes of upcoming regulatory decisions and international product launches.
