The Long-Lost Burger Chain That Was Inspired By A Boomer-Era TV Show - Tasting Table

If you grew up during the 1950s, you likely have fond memories of gathering around the television to watch "The Howdy Doody Show." This Wild West-themed program was hosted by Buffalo Bill and featured the beloved marionette Howdy Doody, a character adored by children across the United States. Interestingly, Howdy Doody inspired the creation of a popular burger chain.

Howdy! Beef n' Burger first opened its doors in the 1960s and quickly gained popularity in the Northeastern United States. The chain was founded by William Rosenberg, who is also known for establishing Dunkin' Donuts. In a unique twist, some locations of Howdy! Beef n' Burger and Dunkin' Donuts operated side by side, reminiscent of the modern KFC/Taco Bell or Pizza Hut combinations.

Rosenberg cleverly utilized Howdy Doody as the chain's mascot, effectively tapping into the affection children had for the character. Kids were delighted to receive a free Howdy sticker with their meals, while the menu, featuring burgers, fried chicken, milkshakes, and fries, catered to a wide range of diners, both young and old.

The branding of Howdy! Beef n' Burger left a lasting impression. Upon entering the restaurant, customers were greeted with the cheerful phrase, "Howdy, may I help you?" Additionally, the catchy advertisement jingle, "Speedy, speedy, speedy service and the best beefburgers yet," became an earworm long before Burger King's "You Rule" campaign hit the airwaves.

Although Howdy! Beef n' Burger was limited to New England, it evokes a sense of nostalgia for those who grew up in Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, or Rhode Island. For many older residents of these states, eating at Howdy! Beef n' Burger is a cherished memory. Regrettably, by the late 1970s, the chain had closed its final location.

Despite the years that have passed, many individuals continue to reminisce about their experiences at Howdy! Beef n' Burger. In a Facebook post discussing the nostalgic chain, one user recalled, "Howdy was a special treat for me. Burgers were 10 cents." Others chimed in with similar sentiments, with another commenter reminiscing, "Great memories there. Burgers, fries, and a shake for almost nothing."
