Why Washington Trust Bancorp Stock Was a Winner Today | The Motley Fool
Investors showed strong confidence in Washington Trust Bancorp (WASH), which saw its stock rise by over 4% on Tuesday, the second trading day of the week. This surge followed the release of the bank's quarterly earnings, which exceeded analysts' expectations, particularly in terms of profitability.
After the market closed on Monday, Washington Trust revealed its third-quarter financial results. The bank reported revenues just shy of $65 million for the quarter, marking a 15% increase compared to the same period last year. Additionally, its net income, calculated according to generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), nearly doubled to $19.4 million from $10.8 million in the prior year. On an adjusted, non-GAAP basis, earnings per share reached $2.50, a significant rise from $1.88 in the third quarter of 2022.
Both the revenue and earnings figures surpassed the average estimates provided by analysts, who had anticipated total revenues of less than $62.9 million and an adjusted earnings per share of only $0.87.
However, not all growth metrics were as encouraging. While Washington Trust managed to increase its net interest income—a vital component for banks—there are some concerns regarding its overall growth trajectory. The bank's deposits and loans saw only a marginal sequential increase of 1%. This limited growth in key areas may raise caution for shareholders, as it suggests potential challenges in expanding the bank's lending and deposit base moving forward.
